Renovation Update Part 6: Sandblasting, Channeling & Frustration

In this video update, some channels have been dug out for future pipes and electrical lines on the second floor. The sandblasters arrive and work on the ground floor rooms that will be the future kitchen and dining area. But overall, there’s a frustration building with the slow pace of work.

What You See in the Video

  • There’s slow progress on the second floor where we are creating a new bathroom and wardrobe room, as well as a new opening to make an existing bathroom ensuite.
  • The walls and ceilings on the ground floor and top floor were sandblasted.
  • The pace of work is very slow and it’s becoming clearer that we need to do something about our builder.

The Story Behind-the-Scenes

I was so happy to show the house to my mom. I’d been having increasing doubts about the builder and seeing her put a positive spin on the work definitely made me feel better!

The sandblasting was a good step forward. It was incredible to see the brick go from peeling plaster and concrete residue to beautiful red bricks. From the moment we saw the house, we could see the potential of the brick vaulted ceilings. I love how they turned out and know they’re easily going to be room centerpieces.

As the one managing the project, I knew there was a brewing problem with the builder. His pace of work slowed drastically and weeks could go by with very few changes. The challenge was that we had a contract. So, it wasn’t as simple as telling him we didn’t want to work with him anymore. A

At the time, I was still hoping that we could find a solution and get the project back to a better pace of progress. But I wasn’t entirely confident that would happen either. Plus, how could I trust this wouldn’t happen again now that we were at this point.

Turns out my hunch was right. In the time that passed between the progress in this video and the next one, a lot happened behind the scenes that stalled our project for a frustratingly long six months. It was very stressful and involved a lot of back and forth going over all the numbers and what had and hadn’t been done up to this point.

Undoubtedly, it was the absolute lowest point of this whole renovation journey. I plan to give all the details in one of my next updates and videos.
