Renovation Plans: Co-Living Considerations

In this video update, I’m answering a question about how the renovation plans are laid out to accommodate for co-living. My husband and I bought this house with my sister and her husband. From the start, we liked this house because of its size and ability to have both common and private spaces.

The Story Behind-the-Scenes

One of the reasons we bought this particular house was because of its layout. The house has separate wings, so to speak. You can easily be in one of these parts and never hear or be bothered by someone else in another part of the house.

We also saw the possibility of large, open common spaces like the future kitchen and dining area and main living room. These rooms would eventually be big enough for all of us to be comfortable. Plus, these spaces can be divided up in such a way that, for example, a few people could be watching TV on one side of the living room while others play a game elsewhere in the room.

On top of this, there are at least three other current rooms that will be an open work space/studio, library, and den. This is all before you take into account any guest bedrooms or the barn and outdoor space. Eventually we’ll convert the upper level of the barn into a covered terrace or three-season room. The courtyard has potential, too, especially the porticoes with their brick vaulted ceilings to become a covered patio and eating area.

Our co-living arrangements, too, are fluid. My husband and I will be able to stay at the house with few restraints. In the short-term, my sister and her husband have my niece and nephews who are in junior high, high school, and college. For now, they’ll be a bit more limited because of the school calendar.

In the end, though, we imagine a house that can be comfortably enjoyed by everyone whether we’re all there together or not.
