I’m excited to help you plan your best trip to Italy so I’m sharing all of my favorite travel resources. These are resources that I’ve used for my own travels here so I know and trust them from firsthand experience. Not to mention, I’m a quasi-local, spending months of each year in Italy.

General Italy Trip Planning

A great flight aggregator to search for the best-priced flights to Italy. You can set price alerts and search a range of dates. When you find what you need, you’ll be sent to the airline’s website to book your flight directly.

A comprehensive and easy-to-use tool to search and reserve accommodations in Italy. I love how it shows important information so clearly. You can easily see what the hotel rate includes and whether or not it’s refundable. Plus, you can search for both hotels and other accommodation types like apartments and vacation homes.

When you’re looking for a unique or upscale vacation rental, look no further than Plum Guide. Their properties have been vetted and hand-selected so you know you’re getting a trusted place to stay. Spend a few minutes scrolling through their properties in places like Venice of the Cinque Terre and you’ll instantly see your Italian dream home come to life!

Trenitalia lets you book regional, intercity, and high speed trains in italy. You can use their website or app just set the language to English. When you book with Trenitalia, you’re booking directly as opposed to using a third-party platform. This could make it easier to change your ticket if you need to do so.

You can search for and book your train reservations throughout Italy (and Europe) with Omio. Download the app to keep your tickets stored on your smartphone. They’re accessible even without an internet connection.
I find Omio helpful when I’m booking trains in and out of Italy because everything is organized in the app for easy access when I need to check the train details or show my ticket. Plus, Omio runs regular promotions that I’ve used to save money on tickets.

Another good tool to search for and book your Italy train reservations. Be sure to download their app for easy access to your tickets.

If you want to pre-book an airport transfer, Welcome Pickups is a trusted global car service at all major airports in Italy. I’ve used them personally many times for my travels over the years and always found the service to be reliable and convenient.

It’s easy to start your rental car search here because Kayak will compare prices from a range of sites. Whenever I need to rent a car in Italy (which is often), I start on Kayak by looking for the best deal on a “pay later” rental option. Then, I head over to Autoslash to track the reservation. If they find something better, I cancel and rebook at the better rate.

With thousands of entry tickets, tours, and activities for top sights and cities around Italy (and the world), Get Your Guide makes it easy to plan your itinerary and make advance bookings. I’ve used them to plan my own travel experiences in Italy and around the globe. I love having all my activity details and tickets in the Get Your Guide app. Everything is viewable even without an internet connection. Plus, most activities some with free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start date.

If you want to learn more about a place you’re visiting in Italy with a topic expert, Context Travel offers private, small group, and even audioguides for many destinations in Italy. These experiences go well beyond the basic facts you’d get on a more generalized tour. There could be a unique angle or specific look at a historical period. And what I love is that you’re being led by a historian, archaeologist, or Ph.D scholar.

I’m a big fan of VoiceMap’s self-led audioguide tours. Not only are they great when you’re on a budget, but these walking tours let you explore and discover at your own pace and timing. So if you’re not a big fan of tour groups or want flexibility in your travel day, VoiceMap is a great resource to help you learn more about where you are. Plus, these guided walks often have a theme so you can look at the town or city you’re visiting from a specific angle while you explore.

World Nomads offers simple and flexible travel insurance. Buy at home or while traveling and claim online from anywhere in the world.

Staying connected is important when you’re in Italy. How will you share all your amazing moments with family and friends, check in on your fur baby, or more importantly search for info and maps in real-time as you travel from one place to the next?
I always use an eSim to avoid paying the expensive daily rate through my U.S. cellular company. For a fraction of the cost, I can stay connected with as much data as I need. I like Holafly in particular because they offer unlimited data on most of their eSims.

TheFork is a helpful website and app for making restaurant reservations. Not every restaurant is listed, but you can search the area where you are or will be and reserve tables for lunch and dinner all online. It’s a lifesaver when you can’t speak enough Italian to call for a reservation or you’re somewhere you need to find a table last-minute.
Top Italy Sights to Book in Advance
Whenever possible, it’s a great idea to book your activity and tour tickets in advance. This helps you avoid time waiting in line and the disappointment of realizing something you wanted to see is sold out. Not to mention, you can compare your options in advance instead of feeling rushed or hustled by a vendor (or scammer) once you’re at the destination.
I’ve highlighted the most popular sights where it’s required or strongly encouraged to book ahead of time.
