In this video update, I’m sharing a few more ways we planned to change the overall layout of the house, especially on the upper floors. These changes included things like removing some walls, adding another bathroom and wardrobe room, and opening up two big windows on the top floor so we could see the view of the rolling hills and the Alps in the distance.
What You See in the Video
- Walls were planning to be removed to make a large living room and ensuite bathroom
- We planned to change where the doorway was for another existing bathroom.
- A new bathroom and wardrobe room was planned.
- The bedroom closest to the barn will have a door to connect it to the barn.
- On the top floor, there’s a sneak peek of where there will be two new window-doors so we could see the view.
The Story Behind-the-Scenes
We’d planned all of these changes except for one. The plan was to remove the wall to make a large living room and bathroom. The house has a ground floor bathroom but both the existing bathrooms on the second floor were connected to bedrooms. We wanted a bathroom that could be for guests without needing to go all the way downstairs.
But once we saw the wall taken down and the living room wide open, we knew it had to stay that way. So, we sacrificed a larger wardrobe room to add the bathroom and keep the living open. It was all made better when we saw the opening to the future terrace on the upper level of the barn. Even though I had climbed to the barn from the courtyard, seeing it open with its beamed ceiling was an absolute “wow” moment.
And on the top floor, we thought about opening one huge panoramic window. But unfortunately, we couldn’t get it approved because it wasn’t inline with the historic look of the house or the village. Instead, we settled on adding two french door-style windows that matched the rest of the room. Regardless of the shape of the windows, there will be no denying the gorgeous view overlooking the rolling hills and the Alps.
Plus, this view will face west. So, it’ll be an amazing vantage point to watch the sunset.
